Story

A lot of people are familiar with Sidamo coffee, but it’s a big region with different zones. The most famous zone is Bensa, but we are on the other side of Sidamo, close to the Gedeo mountains. We’ve got different soil and a different climate, so our washed coffee brings a fresh new twist to this classic profile. This lot uses cherries from our community farmers in Taferi Kela.

We don’t have our own washing mill yet, and processing washed coffee in a rented mill is very challenging. You need electricity, which is usually inconsistent, and you need good equipment, which is usually not there. Since it’s such an intense endeavor, we only produced a few washed lots this year.

With this lot, we had the additional challenge of working with farmers who are still in the training program and learning how to improve their picking. We’re really proud of their progress, however, as they learned to improve both their cherries and their quality of life.

We’re excited to soon be investing in a new, state-of-the-art washing mill for next year that will improve our washed profiles even more, but this year our washed lots are still amazing and bring that unique Sidamo flavor.

Transforming communities

We are rooted in our communities and committed to building a positive and sustainable future by educating and creating equal opportunity jobs at our own facilities.

By distributing climate-resistant seedlings and providing "learning by doing" programs for children and adults, we facilitate our communities to transform their futures. We are honored to work with local chiefs, community leaders, and smallholder farmers to grow and source our spectacular Bette Buna coffees.

At our farms in Taferi Kela-Sidamo and Guji-Megadu we work closely with our family and neighbours to grow seedlings, rewild coffee forests, and train farmers in methods of growing and processing that create opportunities for everyone in our community.
