Story

This is a wonderful lot grown by Gash Syoum. Along with lot 25.13, it has an extra special story.

A few years ago we started working with some community farmers in Guji, and two of those farmers are neighbors Gash Syoum and Gash Sentayehu. They’re a bit older, but they are both really committed to quality and produce incredible coffee. We saw something else as well – they treat the people on their farms with kindness and have a high respect for human beings, something you don’t often see in remote areas where circumstances are tough. So we made a gentleman’s agreement with them that if they continued to grow their coffee this way, we’d continue to buy their cherries year after year.

That first year we bought their cherries and processed them anaerobically. Both Gash Syoum and Gash Sentayehu were interested in this method, so together we started reinventing the processing. Now, three years in, they manage the processing on their own with some advice from us, and we visit their farms several times a year. They create absolutely stunning natural anaerobic lots on a larger scale, and their quality improves each year – along with the demand for these lots!

It’s a wonderful collaboration between two community farmers and Bette Buna that lifts the cup profiles to another level, and we think there’s a great future ahead for these two farmers as role models who showcase the power of kindness and collaboration.

Give this coffee a try. It’s impossible to mess up, it’s that beautiful.

Transforming communities

We are rooted in our communities and committed to building a positive and sustainable future by educating and creating equal opportunity jobs at our own facilities.

By distributing climate-resistant seedlings and providing "learning by doing" programs for children and adults, we facilitate our communities to transform their futures. We are honored to work with local chiefs, community leaders, and smallholder farmers to grow and source our spectacular Bette Buna coffees.

At our farms in Taferi Kela-Sidamo and Guji-Megadu we work closely with our family and neighbours to grow seedlings, rewild coffee forests, and train farmers in methods of growing and processing that create opportunities for everyone in our community.
